In our experience, people are quite surprised by how much work is involved on their end when it comes to getting a successful website up and running.
Don't be scared!
It is this stage that separates a good website from a great website. A successful website is born of proper planning...plain and simple. It is for this reason we are not advocates of pre-fabricated websites...think about it: you wouldn't build the exterior of a house before you knew what was going inside it, would you? Content dictates design, not the other way around.
A website is a powerful tool to present information to people. It provides an element of interactivity that no other medium affords, and we must take full advantage of this. Think of your website as an employee: one that never calls in sick, is never late, and works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! It can provide existing and potential clientele information when you aren't able to, make sales while you sleep, and grow with your business.
All of this is possible with a well-devised game plan.
Goal setting can really help you reflect on what it is you want your audience to do, and how you're going to get there.
After establishing what you want your audience to do, we must establish how we are going to get them to do it! A call to action is the method in which you do so. Be it using bait ("sign up now and get ___ free!"), an expiry date (gives action a sense of urgency), or even a big red shiny button, it should be easily identifiable, easy to use, and free of distractions from getting the audience to complete it.
With the explosive growth of the Internet, competition is fierce! This is yet another reason why this first step is so important to the success of your website. With millions of websites out there, you need to set yours apart from others, and a good starting plan is one way to ensure that you will.
Search engines (such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN) are so paramount to driving new business to websites, that shifts in their algorithms (the method used to rank websites in the results they return based on keywords entered) in extreme cases have been known to wipe online businesses out completely!
With a well-laid plan, effective, keyword rich copywriting, and an efficient way of presenting it online, these catastrophes can be avoided. We'll even lend a hand in the writing process if it'll help!
